Weather and the best time to film in Egypt

Egypt is sunny almost every day of the year, which is one reason productions come here. The real planning questions are heat, wind, daylight and holidays. Here is what we tell producers before they lock dates.

October to April: the main season

Most international shoots happen between October and April. Days in Cairo are warm and comfortable, nights can be cool, especially in the desert, and the light is soft and golden for much of the day. Luxor and Aswan are at their best in winter.

Rain is rare. Winter brings occasional cloudy days and, on the Mediterranean coast around Alexandria, some rain and rough sea.

May to September: hot but workable

Summer is hot. Cairo is regularly in the mid to high 30s Celsius and Upper Egypt and the desert can pass 40. Shoots still happen in summer with early calls, a long lunch break and night work. The Red Sea and the North Coast are popular summer locations, and the long days give you more usable light.

Locations by region →

Khamsin winds and sand

In spring, mainly March to May, hot dusty winds called the khamsin can blow for a day or two at a time and reduce visibility. We build weather cover into desert schedules in that period.

Ramadan and holidays

During Ramadan the working day changes and many crew members fast, so we schedule shorter days and plan around iftar. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier every year. Eid holidays, Coptic Christmas and national holidays affect permits and location access, so check your dates with us early.
